MPH Construction on behalf of East Midlands Railway

Back

Building on the successful delivery of 20 shelters in 2024, MPH has re-appointed Vextrix on behalf of East Midlands Railway (EMR) to deliver the next phase of passenger waiting shelters as part of ongoing station enhancements.

This project will see the replacement of shelters across eight stations, with a focus on improving passenger comfort. A total of 11 new shelters will be installed, including six sustainable timber shelters and five traditional Macemain shelters, with the natural shelters introduced at four of the stations.

Vextrix’s Role in Delivering Shelter Replacements

Vextrix has been appointed to provide comprehensive engineering and design services. This includes civils design, 3D laser scanning utilising Pointcloud data, to producing existing and proposed drawings, and mechanical and electrical (M&E) design to improve electrical supply and integrate future data services. To support accuracy and efficiency in design and planning, Vextrix conducted 3D scans of all 11 stations, creating Matterport virtual walkthroughs to capture as-built conditions and facilitate digital site access. This provided point cloud data and digital records for each location, ensuring precise execution of the shelter replacements.

A Sustainable Take on Rail Shelters

The introduction of brand-new sustainable timber shelters provides a lower-carbon, environmentally friendly alternative for waiting areas. These lightweight shelters require less structural support and balance aesthetic design with biodiversity-enhancing features, such as a water butt for rainwater collection and distribution. To facilitate these new shelters, Vextrix worked closely with Natural Shelters to align the project with MPH and EMR’s commitment to a more sustainable and efficient railway infrastructure.

“Natural Shelter designed and supplied precision-engineered passenger shelters for the EMR project, collaborating closely with Vextrix on requirements and installation. Constructed with Accoya wood, Natural Shelters offer Class 1 durability and are warranted for up to 50 years. These low-carbon structures are 100% reusable and recyclable, establishing Natural Shelter as a recognised leader in sustainable passenger shelters for rail and bus operators."

Technical Delivery & Regulatory Compliance

Vextrix played a key role in ensuring regulatory compliance and technical approvals. The project involved the completion of Form G, IDC/IDR processes, and fulfilling CRE and CEM responsibilities. Landlord consent was managed throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring seamless collaboration with our client, MPH. Additionally, Form C (Temporary Works) was submitted to Network Rail for final approval, securing the necessary permissions for project execution.

Principal Designer & CDM Responsibilities

Vextrix was appointed directly by EMR to lead CDM and Principal Designer duties of the scheme. In line with CDM Regulations (2015), Vextrix provided Principal Designer services, ensuring health and safety compliance throughout the project. This included conducting health and safety inspections, completing site risk assessments, preparing pre-construction information, reviewing construction phase plans, and identifying design hazards and risks. Drawing reviews and comprehensive health and safety files were compiled to ensure compliance and mitigate project risks.

By combining advanced digital scanning, innovative design solutions, and a strong commitment to safety and compliance, Vextrix is continuing to support MPH and EMR in delivering a modern, efficient, and passenger-focused railway environment.
